About This Application
- What is Dash for Gold?
- Actuate Dash for Gold is a live web application that demonstrates in a fun way what BIRT can do. Dash for Gold shows the power of dashboards and is built using BIRT 360 dashboards running on and powered by Actuate's BIRT onDemand cloud-based SaaS platform.
- Who is KXEN and how did they make their predictions?
- KXEN is a leading provider of predictive analytics headquartered in Silicon Valley. Using their predictive analytics modeler they analyzed various sets of data such as past sports statistics (over nearly 60 years), prior world championship data and World Bank data to build a model that could predict the results of each country per discipline in the competitions as well as the number of medals they are likely to win. For more information about KXEN and its InfiniteInsight™ Modeler, see kxen.com.
- Where did the data come from?
- Most of the world data is from The World Bank website at data.worldbank.org. Other world data came from other sources. Nobel Peace Prize winners came from Wikipedia. Time Zone Difference was calculated manually. Wine consumption data came from oiv.int. The medal counts and all associated information comes from Wikipedia.

- How do I use the KXEN Predicted Medal Potential Dashboard?
- Choose one or more countries and one or more event disciplines to set the context of the dashboard to see how your favorite countries will perform in the selected disciplines. The predictions in the table are the result of KXENs Infinite Insight which takes into account historic sports statistics and performance data to arrive at a “Potential Medals” score for each discipline and gender. The list currently only displays those countries that KXEN predicts will medal, so you may not find your favorite country if it is not predicted to win an event. As actual results become available the table will be updated with all countries that medal for a true comparison of results to predictions. Hold down the control (PC) or Command (Mac) key to select more than one country/event.
- How do I use the Interactive Analysis Dashboard?
- Select one or more countries from the map and one measurement from a World Data Category to display a chart that shows the ranking of each country for that indicator and medals won in each event discipline. If a country did not report any data in a particular year, a bubble will not be shown - even if the country won medals that year. Note that over time, countries have combined, split apart and changed names. We have mapped current countries with old countries to gain a complete medal count over time as best we could. The data in this graph goes back to 1960 at the earliest and will only show years where data is available. Hovering your mouse cursor over a bubble on the graph will display the correlated information for that country and discipline. Clicking on a bubble with your mouse will drill into another display to show the details of this aggregation. Clicking the “Play” button will allow you to see the information animate across time to uncover trends about the correlated country data and medal counts.
