The jar files that are included with the e.Spreadsheet Designer can only be used with the designer. Unfortuntately their was a bug in the build process of the M8 release of the e.Spreadsheet Engine that did not include the essd9.jar. Milestone 9 will be released in the next few weeks.

I had downloaded Milestone 7, and it contains a essd9.jar file that was built on 6/24/2008 (e.Spreadsheet Engine 13.0.0 Build 57572.)

When I try to create a spreadsheet with it I get the license error.

I just use the jar to create a spreadsheet inside our java client application (i.e. don't use your designer or server.)

I don't want to wait a few weeks for Milestone 9 and find out that it does not solve our licensing issue...

The error message seems to indicate that either the included license has the wrong expiration date (1969), or, more likely, the license is missing and the program defaults to the default date. If that is the case, could somebody send me the license file so I could run the beta?

Since the error is:

"There is no license file. This is a trial version of e.Spreadsheet Engine which will expire
on or about Wed Dec 31 19:00:00 EST 1969", either provide a license file with with the beta, or change the default expiration date to a reasonable date (like 12/31/2008)

Hi Cescolar,

The issue was resolved immediately after you reported it. Thanks for your feedback! Please continue using and providing feedback on the A10 e.Spreadsheet beta builds.

A big apology for not getting back to you sooner. With the Actuate User Conference at the beginning of August and vacation I fell behind on email.

I downloaded milestone 9. Still gives me the exact same problem.

This is the version of the jar:

java -cp essd9.jar com.f1j.swing.engine.ss.JBook

e.Spreadsheet Engine 13.0.0 Build 58959.

Copyright 1993-2007 Actuate Corporation

___

Could you please fix it ASAP? I can't afford to wait another 19 days and find out that it is not fixed...

Cescolar,

Apologies for the confusion and for the long wait. The licensing issue that you reported was resolved in milestone 10. So you will need a milestone 10 build. Click here to download the milestone 10 Actuate 10 e.SE BETA:

http://download.birt...tEngine_M10.zip

The milestone 10 builds for all the other Actuate 10 BETA products will become available from this URL by the end of the week:

Regards,
Mihail

Milestone 10 solves the license problem, but it does not support the printToPDF method that milestone 9 did!

(The main reason why we need Actuate 10 is the PDF support...)

Also: printing issues:
- The print setup dialog comes with "Print Range: All" pre-selected, and we are unable to select specific sheets.
- When we print, even though "All" is selected, only the current sheet prints. (Pages should mean "sheets".)
- When printing multiple copies it prints the copies of each page after each other, instead of multiple copies of the job (i.e. it prints P1,P1,P2,P2 instead of P1,P2,P1,P2) so we need to separate the copies manually

Use document.fileSaveAs() to create a PDF.

-The Print Range determines what physical print pages to print, it is not a reference to sheets. For example, if printing the active sheet results in 3 pages being printed, you can option to only print pages 2 and 3. The Print What area of the dialog determines whether to print the active sheet, selection, or entire range. There is an open issue right regarding the Active Sheet option. If you use control-click to select multiple sheets, it will only print one. This should be fixed prior to final release.

-Is the collate checkbox not working when you print multiple copies?

You are right about the collate option: I found it in the printer properties window, and it works fine. Thanks.

I tried the fileSaveAs but got an error:

theBook.getDocument().fileSaveAs(fos, DocumentType.PDF, documentSaveCallback);//actuate 10 - test PDF output

Gives me:

printToPDF failed:Operation cannot be performed using headless BookModel. Use a JBook instead.

com.f1j.util.F1PrintException: Operation cannot be performed using headless BookModel. Use a JBook instead.

Outputting the spreadsheet as PDF will require graphics support. The BookModel is a non-graphics interface implemented by BookModelImpl that does not use graphics. If you switch your code from BookModel to JBook you should be fine.

Could you explain with a few lines of code?

fileSaveAs is a method of Document, what should I switch?

Here is some sample code that reads in an XLS and writes out a PDF:

import java.io.File;

import com.f1j.ss.Document;

import com.f1j.ss.DocumentOpenCallback;

import com.f1j.ss.DocumentSaveCallback;

import com.f1j.ss.DocumentType;

import com.f1j.swing.engine.ss.JBook;

public class SavePDF {

   public SavePDF(){

      JBook book = null;

      try {

         Document doc = new Document(null, new File("c:\example.xls"), new DocumentOpenCallback());

            try{

               book = new JBook(doc);

               try{

                  book.getDocument().fileSaveCopyAs(new File("C:\example.pdf"), DocumentType.PDF, new DocumentSaveCallback(book));

               }finally{

                  book.destroy();

               }

            }finally{

               doc.release();

            }

         } catch (Exception e) {

            e.printStackTrace();

         }

      }

      public static void main(String[] args) {

         new SavePDF();

      }

}
