At a huge BIRT Roadshow event in Bangalore, India this morning, Pete Cittadini, CEO of Actuate, announced a new worldwide contest to all BIRT developers called Get Started with BIRT. The challenge is to take advantage of BIRT's wide extensibility features and create new and exciting plug-ins that expand the versatility and capabilities of BIRT.

Actuate will award a 32GB iPad 2 to each of the best four plug-ins submitted to either DevShare or the BIRT Exchange Marketplace between September 1, 2011 and October 15, 2011.

Here are some categories of suggested projects to look into:

• Data Adapters (ODA drivers)
  
  • Social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter
    
  • Big Data sources like MongoDB
    
  • Other data sources such as Google Analytics, Excel or FileMaker
• Output Adapters (Emitters)
  
  • CSV, XML or XBRL
    
  • Other data formats
• Design Items (Report Item Extensions)
  
  • Drawing and Aggregate Functions
    
  • Other controls and report elements
• Charts (Chart Extensions)
  
  • Heat and Density Maps/Plots
    
  • Other chart formats
