BIRT leverages the Eclipse Data Tools Platform (DTP) project for its data access framework. The attached tutorial was presented at EclipseCon 2009 jointly by Linda Chan (Actuate Corporation), Brian Fitzpatrick (Sybase) and Brian Payton (IBM).

Birt Version:-

The Eclipse Data Tools Platform (DTP) project provides a number of key exemplary end-user tools for working with data sources (databases or other sources). Whether your task is working primarily on a data source or to build data-centric applications with Eclipse, DTP can help.  We'll start with an overview of DTP and the tools available from an user perspective:

  • Understanding DTP components
  • Setting up a database connection in DTP
  • Viewing the structure and contents of a database
  • Building SQL queries using the SQL Query Builder
  • Viewing and executing stored procedures
  • Creating and modifying a database table and its data content

Next, we will focus on how adopters can extend and enable DTP to support a new type of data source.

  • Extending DTP for a specific database, using SQLite as an example
  • Extending DTP for a non-database data source with Open Data Access
  • Expanding the SQL Query Model for a specific database

Finally, we'll discuss how DTP is leveraged in other Eclipse projects, such as BIRT and WTP.  We will also go over some examples on how to integrate DTP functionalities in a data-centric application.

After completing this tutorial, you’ll be poised to make DTP a valuable part of your data tooling platform!
